Fireworks flare between commissioner, representatives

St. Louis County Commissioner Keith Nelson of Fayal Township is strongly critical of Reps. Tom Rukavina of Pike Township and Carly Melin of Hibbing for their bill to nix a deal between the county and City of Virginia for sale of tax forfeit land that was the former Staver Foundry site by drastically cutting the cost of the parcel from $150,000 to $30,000.

ST. PAUL — The Virginia land deal for the former Staver Foundry site was done, a sealed package between county and city officials and ready to be signed off on at the St. Louis County Board next Tuesday.

But two state legislators have intervened in St. Paul with a bill to substantially change the sale price on the tax forfeited land, and so, for now, it’s a deal no more.
